Practical case studies

The project "Biblioteca telematica italiana" / Mirko Tavoni [*], Alberto Petrucciani [*]

Abstract

The project "Biblioteca telematica italiana" (http://cibit.humnet.unipi.it) aims at building a digital library, on the Internet, of texts highly representative of the Italian cultural tradition from the Middle Ages to the 19th century: literature, language, cultural history in a general sense. The library is designetd to appeal to scholars and students of Italian culture and language throughout the world and to be a research and teaching tool. In order to realize the project, 16 Italian universities have pooled their multidiscipline research units into CIBIT, an interuniversity centre. The database now available online, includes about 400 texts which will increase to 1,000 by the end of 1999. These can be accessed for reading and, above all, for full-text query with a special search engine called DBT, devised by the Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale of the CNR. One of the most interesting characteristics of "Biblioteca telematica italiana" is the development of a real library achitecture online, as it includes the full cataloguing and indexing of the texts, of their respective editions and electronic editions, stored in authority files of names and titles, covering also terms referring to genres and discourse with definitions and links.

This stucture also aims at making exchange possible and the experiment of models and tools exportable to other co-operation projects, such as CWIB, Coordinamento dei Web Italiani per Bibliotecari. Therefore, within "Biblioteca telematica italiana" dialogues will be studied between library catalogues and other bibliographic data bases in international bibliographic standards (UNIMARC) on the one hand and, on the other, digital libraries in standards now being available online (metadata, particularly Dublin Core). Communication and the best possible integration between the two areas is essential to prevent a gap between the two major information sources now publicly available. The project aims to build an archive of terms, thesaurus style, and of the relevant conversion procedures to and from UNIMARC and Dublin Core standards. In the same way, following the first kinds of links among texts between the text of "Biblioteca telematica italiana" and the library online catalogues, procedures will be developed to import UNIMARC data into "Biblioteca telematica italiana" and to export from the same catalogue in order to record the electronic resources of "Biblioteca telematica italiana" in the OPACs of other libraries, starting with those of the universities that take part in the project.
