In 1995 among the librarians of the University of Pisa a study group on the working loads was estabilished with the aim to produce a useful tool to analize and describe the librarian activities, estimate the working time of each of them and give more general information about the organization of the work. The method followed has combined a synthetic approach with regard to the measurement of the times and a more analytical approach in order to give a clear description of the work; this has promoted a systematic revision and a better awareness of the work and has given an explanation of the time needed to carry it on. The survey illustrates the results of this research, and in particular: the distiction between "librarian" and "not librarian" acitvities, a better definition of the outputs necessary to define the standard or not standard activities, the punctual description of the phases in which the working processes are articulated, the ways of carryung out each of them.
