An analysis of school librarians' role is drawn, and competencies and knowledge are pointed out. A schematic presentation is given of essential competencies in information and library studies, management and instructions, which form the basis of the several functions of school librarian. Each of the listed functions is explained and the related competencies and knwoledge are shown. A cheklist for competencies evaluation in enclose. The text is completed by a short bibliography and the two major statements on school libraries, one by UNESCO and the other by IASL (International Association of School Librarians).
