Communication is a process involving the exchange of messages among two or more individuals; it has a fundamental role within library activities. The basic principles are introduced: the elements of verbal and non verbal communication, the stages of learning, the types of messages, and the most relevant obstacles to an effective communication. The content of this report was the subject of a course organized by the Italian Library Association, on November 27-29, 1995 .
