Electronic Publishing

Digital art and digital libraries / Claudio Di Benedetto [*]

Abstract

This paper describes a contribution to the construction of a possible role for libraries as 'electronic publishers'. It was inspired by European Commission FP5 (www.cordis.lu/improving/src/ari_desc.htm), an invitation for museums, libraries and archives to co-operate. Although no project was put forward, an initiative was devised for the online access to artworks of one or more museums. By linking separate archives, the digital reproduction of the actual artwork (painting, sculpture, monument, etc. either as a whole or separated into further details) can lead to digitalised reproductions of related works (e. g. the deposition from the cross, the baptism of Jesus, the ruins in the background, etc.), to the existing bibliography about the artwork and to the full-text of a selected title owned by different libraries.

A prototype will be outlined for such an integrated archive and a PowerPoint demo will try to render the idea of a resulting multimedia product which should allow both traditional virtual tours of the museum collections and refined study and research tools for in-situ and remote access. Probable costs and technical details of the project will also be illustrated. The aim is to demonstrate how libraries can carry out their part by contributing with their own specific skills, while other cultural institutions will be involved for their respective research and products.
