Marketing during the transition from print to electronic / Desmond Reaney [*]

Abstract

Journals publishing is changing. The transition from print to electronic formats has created fresh challenges for those responsible for bringing scholarly information to the marketplace. Accelerated product development and new pricing structures, increased customer support and ongoing user education, the emergence of aggregators and library consortia, have combined to alter the face of the serials business beyond recognition. At a fundamental level publishers are obliged to re-think what journals are and how they work.

It is now imperative that journals marketing strategies engage with the whole information community – readers and librarians, authors and referees. My presentation adopts this broader view, examining ways of halting the pricing spiral by adding value at no extra cost, advocating evolution over revolution, and looking towards the right model for journals publishing in the 21st Century.
